He describes the background, working lives and interests of his parents; the small Jewish community within his home town; his school attendance; the rise of Nazism and antisemitism during the 1930s and its affect on the community and his family, including the boycott of his father's shop, his memories of Kristallnacht when the family was taken into custody and his father sent to a concentration camp; his journey on the Kindertransport via Berlin, Cologne and the Netherlands; the fate of his parents and other members of his family duirng the war; his settlement in the UK including employment, his experiences during World War II and his decision to go to university.
