Bringing together UK Holocaust testimony

Holocaust Testimony UK works with partner institutions across Britain and beyond to share interviews with Holocaust survivors and refugees from Nazism who faced discrimination, antisemitism, segregation, persecution, violence and displacement. Many built new lives when they came to the UK, before and after WW2. We also share interviews with rescuers and liberators.

This initiative of the UK Government and The Association of Jewish Refugees was created to advance Holocaust education by providing user-friendly access to thousands of recorded interviews, and to honour the legacy of the Holocaust survivors and refugees who have courageously shared their testimonies with different institutions over the last 45 years.

"… very important for people to realise what hatred can do, and I'm all against any wars and I feel that people should really spend more time, er, looking after each other and try to understand each other."

— Alicia Adams

"…so many of them didn't make it. Lottie Krakow didn't make it, the girl I loved. A lot of the other pupils didn't make it. So, I feel it's important to tell the story so far as I know it so that people should understand, these were innocent children, totally innocent children who did not understand why this was being done to them."

— Eli Abt

"I was at one point, a transport came out from Hungary, rabbis and all sort of Talmudists. They degraded them. They cut their beards off, and he spoke to me. He saw me, he saw I'm a little boy, a young boy. He said, "Mordecai." Martins are called Mordecai. "You are a young boy. You will survive. Don't forget to tell them what happened here." They always talk like that. And I feel it's my duty. I survived because, uh, really to tell the story."

— Martin Bennett

"I mainly wanted it for my grandchildren. Mainly. But I think it's important for everybody - whether it's in England or in Timbuktu - to know that horrible, unique, I can't compare it with anything else, period of the Nazis towards such a minority as us Jews. Why? Was it for the money? Was it for the dispossession of everything, including hair? Was it for propaganda to entice hate? What was the purpose of such monstrosity?"

— Genia Schwarzmann

"The distribution of life chances in this world is often a very random bus"

— Professor Peter Pultzer

"… for too many years I was too busy, I didn’t have the confidence in talking. Now I don’t mind talking and if I don’t do it now who will do it? That’s why I’m doing it. And hopefully, hopefully that it does make some sense in people’s future thinking."

— Harry Spiro BEM

"I think it's important for future generations to know what happened and to learn from first hand, from people’s experiences and that should never happen again. But I get a bit depressed when I read the news— there are comments and views expressed which are comparable to those expressed in the 30s by the Nazis. So in some ways we haven't learned, we haven't moved on. So I think that's why, that's why it's important that the Holocaust should not be forgotten."

— Ivan Shaw MBE

"We are the last witnesses. If we don't give a testimony, we don't say what happened and what we remember that happened, would be very bad, because there are so many Holocaust denials nowadays. There are more and more of them. We cannot afford to, for them to take over from what happened to those who perished. We owe it to them. We owe it to the ones who died terrible deaths. Six millions. One million children. Innocent people."

— Lili Pohlmann MBE

"I think it’s so important to know that there were some very decent, genuine, good people. Unfortunately, not enough. They risked their lives, they put them self out, and they - If we are here today thanks to them. There’s no other. And that’s why I just feel, the story is important."

— Zita Kahan

"That the future generation should know and should never, never happen again. That is important."

— Renee Bornstein BEM

"…it is important for the future generations, to know what went on. How we lost many, many members of our family. How, how we lost six million Jews."

— Marcel Anisfield

"The whole reason that we have this interview is to let future generations know what kind of life of we had so they should have a better life, not have to suffer through all the traumas we had to suffer. As time goes on the memory of those days and the importance of it will dim, and this programme will help keep it in people's minds and hopefully let future generations have a better life. It should be a better world."

— Arnold Weinberg
